It’s hard to explain Texting of the Bread. It’s a game that features gingerbread zombies attacking your character. you shoot them with a giant gun that fires milk.
Okay.
But this isn’t a shooter, it’s a texter. Each zombie shows up with a word attached to it, and the only interface the player deals with is the iPhone’s virtual keyboard. You have to type the word to kill the zombie. Only one word is ever available at a time, which can make for a harrowing experience.
Texting of the Bread excels in several places. First, the concept is great – most people text a lot anyway, so this is a skill challenge in a place where lots of people have the skill. And each level usually has a theme to all the words, which can often be hilarious: One whole wave was dedicated to “The Big Lebowski” references. And when lots of zombies crowd the screen, the tension gets thick as you furiously pound the virtual keyboard. It’s a lot of fun.
But at least on my older iPhone, I found Texting of the Bread marred with technical problems. Frequent crashes were irritating, and usually happened at the end of a level.
I also had serious trouble with lag on the keyboard, with it often failing to collect my typing for several seconds while I got mauled, instantly sucking all fun from a three-block radius.
Texting of the Bread can be a lot of fun and innovative, but if you’re an older phone user, you might want to steer clear until there’s an update.
