Finally, you can play a music game with your fingers and feel tough and rugged doing it. Although Tapulous has been putting out new versions of its Tap Tap Revenge rhythm game for a almost a year, each one featuring a different artist or package of artists, the developer had largely ignored hard rock as a tappable genre of music. That finally ends with Metallica Revenge.
While Metallica fans should be pleased to be able to tap away at 10 of their favorite songs, even fans of the poppier Tap Tap games will find features to like here, including a unique board layout, the potential for greater bonus multipliers, and even an arcade mode that throws hazard-causing bombs into the musical mix.
For the uninitiated, Metallica Revenge (and all other Tap Tap games, for that matter) are basically like a version of Guitar Hero that you play with your fingers. Music notes (or in this case, bowling balls) fly towards you down separate rails, where its your job to tap on the balls with your fingers as they approach, just like playing the guitar in a rhythm game.
Metallica Revenge works well in part for the same reasons the other Tap Taps work — because the game is so simple, you can easily get sucked in trying to beat a previous high score.
The biggest downside to Metallica Revenge, like other entries in the artist-specific Tap Tap games, is its price. While you can purchase Tap Tap Revenge 3 for 99 cents and receive a handful of free songs with the option to purchase more, Metallica Revenge locks you in at $5 with only 10 Metallica songs and little else to show for your purchase. It seems a bit steep, but for anyone hoping to give a little hard rock edge to their iPhone music apps, it’s still a worthy purchase.
