Junecloud is one of my favorite developers of apps for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, and perhaps my favorite. So there’s no confusion, I have no affiliation with the company or its employees and don’t think I’ve even communicated with them in the past, sans maybe a tweet or two espousing my love of package tracker Delivery Status Touch. Despite its high price tag of $4.99, I desperately wanted a look at the latest product from Junecloud: universal app Notefile.
Notefile is a simple note-taking app, free of extras. The interface is well-designed, and features a blank space to take notes in either portrait or landscape mode. Tap the space, and the keyboard pops out for you to type on. Hide the keyboard, and you’ll see at bottom center the number of notes you have available. By tapping those words, you’ll be taken to a home screen that contains all of your available notes and the date each was last modified. From this screen, you can tap the plus sign to create a new file, or swipe across an existing note to delete.
If you stop there, Notefile is just your basic app, and doesn’t really do anything more than the native Notes app, until you consider the sync function. Notefile will sync across devices, so notes you take on your iPhone will appear on your iPad at app launch. Sync requires a free Junecloud account, but current Delivery Status Touch users will be able to use their existing login (seriously, if you shop online often, consider downloading). In addition to syncing across iDevices, Notefile can also sync with the available Notefile dashboard widget for Mac OS X. The widget will sync with your iDevice versions of Notefile so you can create a shopping list on your laptop and then make a correction on your iPad seamlessly.
Junecloud offers a web portal for updating and syncing, too, but as someone constantly relying on dashboard Stickies two and three deep on my MacBook Pro, Notefile has already proven its worth. My stacks of Stickies have been imported into the Notefile widget, and are now accessible to me on the go. If Junecloud is taking suggestions for improvements, I’d love to see an option to title or name a note to make the list screen neater, but aside from that I’ve fallen hard for Notefile.
