With all apologies to wonderful apps like 950 ESPN app. It broadcasts all the Phillies postseason games and even has a background feature that allows you to listen to the station without the app being open.
NBA iPhone apps
The San Antonio Spurs may be the most successful NBA team of the past 10 years. Furthermore, being the only major sports franchise in Central Texas, they also have a rabid fan base.
Pounding the Rock gives iPhone users access to the San Antonio Spurs’ blog of the same name. In addition to posts from the blog, you can also share them via email or Twitter through the app.
Similar apps include Bright Side of the Sun (Phoenix Suns blog), Clips Nation (Los Angeles Clippers blog) and Blogging the Boys (Dallas Cowboys blog).
In case you haven’t paid attention to basketball since the late 90s, things aren’t going so well for the Knicks. Turns out giving multiple-year, big-money contracts to Jerome James, Jared Jeffries and Eddy Curry was a bad idea. Who knew?
At least Knicks fans have the Official New York Knicks app. While there is nothing special about the apps’ news and photo sections, there are quite a few videos included for a free app.
NHL iPhone apps
While the Florida Panthers aren’t exactly one of the more storied NHL franchises, they can boast one of the top hockey apps in Panthers Hockey 2009/2010. This app from the Miami Herald gives users access to the “On Frozen Pond” blog and news from the Herald as well as sources such as NHL.com and ESPN.
Panthers Hockey even boasts an app-exclusive chat room and, in addition to all the Panthers-specific information, it has an NHL news section as well.
On the other hand, there are few teams in any sport with more history than the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The team’s free, official app — appropriately titled Toronto Maple Leafs — has live scoring, videos, stats, news and standings. It’s a nice looking app that is one of the best sports apps available, let alone one of the best hockey apps.
iPhone apps for non-“Big Four” teams
Even followers of teams that are not part of one of the big four professional sports leagues have options on the iPhone.
Aside from a goofy 3D Goals sections, MyMadrid is an all-around fantastic app. What sets this app for Real Madrid C.F. apart from other team-specific apps is a really well done historical section, which includes great videos and information about the soccer team’s past.
The Rider App allows fans of the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders (not to be confused with the now-defunct Ottawa Rough Riders) to follow the team from their iPhone. There is pretty standard stuff here — Twitter feeds, news links, stats and scores — but it’s nice to see an app from the other football league.
