Split! leads iPhone Games of the Week

This week saw some pretty great iOS titles, many of them from smaller developers and indie sources. Our leader is Split!, the first game from developer Touchy Interactive, that brings an easy to pick up strategy title to the App Store that still offers quite a bit of challenge. Read all about it, and four other quality iOS offerings, on our list below.

Split! (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Simple controls and speedy gameplay make Split! a fast-paced strategy title. You’re tasked with controlling a pair of soldiers as they fight to break out of prison, positioning them around the battlefield so they can take down guards without getting shot down themselves. The controls are easy – just touch and drag to create paths for each character – but the strategy can get complex as more and more elements like switches, doors and cover are added. Split’s an easy game to pick up and play, but it manages to be plenty challenging as well.

Fish Heroes (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Fish Heroes stands among the crop of titles that use the same formula as Angry Birds, altering the idea to make a similar game that’s interesting in its own way. In Fish Heroes, players fling fish at enemy sharks, using their different powers to knock over as many of the enemies as possible with as few shots as possible. The difference is that Fish Heroes uses 3-D graphics, allowing players to approach every level from any angle. The puzzles are complex in a way many games haven’t demonstrated, requiring players to figure out the weak points of each structure in order to get the best score. Sure, it’s derivative, but Fish Heroes does a good job of iterating on the core idea to present something familiar, but fresh.

Fuusio (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Logic puzzles in Fuusio can get pretty challenging. The game presents players with a grid, and on that grid are “shape squares,” or pieces that when fit together to form a complete square. Completing all the squares in a level is key to clearing it, but Fuusio throws in a bunch of complications, like other squares that alter the shapes, change their colors, and move them around the board. You’re scored by the speed with which you solve puzzles, and with so many different squares in play, Fuusio gets challenging in a hurry. It’s a great way to test your mental prowess.

Mutant Storm (iPad) $4.99

Leveraging the power of the iPad 2 and the new iPad, Mutant Storm is gorgeous 3-D, top-down shooter that previously made its home on the Xbox 360. Players will recognize the tropes here, as they’ve been explored in similar shooters, but Mutant Storm’s speed and graphical style keep it fresh. The game also packs two different game modes, plus eight levels of difficulty to keep the challenge level high for players.

Trivial (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

Apple’s iOS devices are great for asynchronous games – that is, games in which players can take turns playing but don’t have to be playing at the same time. Trivial takes this model and applies it to one-on-one trivia games, allowing you to link in with Facebook and challenge your friends and family, or just random strangers, to short games of speedy question-answering. The faster you clear through the questions, the higher your score, and when your opponent has had their shot, the winner is tallied. Trivial provides a quick, easy and convenient game to be played against friends, and adds a few little twists to the standard trivia format, like power-ups, to keep things interesting.
