Spell well (and fast) with Speller app for iPhone

It turns out that all of those spelling books that tortured us in grade school now serve no purpose thanks to applications like the Speller – Free Spell Checker.

The next time you need to spell “hippopotamus” in a pinch, you can reach into your pocket for the answer. Even better, as a free app, you won’t have to go there in advance to pay for anything.

Like most spell-checking programs, Speller is good for looking up words quickly. The app provides you with many potential matches in a relatively short period of time.

Among Speller’s shortcomings is that it does not work as well as other apps when it comes to predicting whatever words you are typing. It’s hit and miss.

When spelled correctly, words like “cantaloupe”, “plethora” and “arachnophobia” were recognized by the program after a few characters.  Words like “tomorrow”, “bologna” and “onomatopoeia”, however, needed to be nearly typed out before the app could decipher the text entry.

Speller also works as a dictionary, with the Google integration feature providing you with definitions from multiple dictionary Web sites at the touch of your finger. The coolest feature is the program’s ability to customize your speller to use American, British or Canadian English.

It may not be enough to win a Scrabble Tournament, but you can’t beat the price and does work well enough.
