Hunters don’t strike me as a big target market for iPhone apps. Then again, I never thought anyone would want to watch a clock countdown, but developers continue to pump out various countdown apps.
One genre that makes perfect sense is hunting call apps. Having access to a wide array of something on a small device is exactly what the iPhone does well.
Primos Hunting Calls: Speak The Language is a $3.99 app which provides you with access to the company’s different products, such as the Heartbreaker, the Hoochie Mama and the Great Big Can. Many of them you have to move yourself, while others just require you to select a button.
The calls are broken down into six sections — Turkey, Predator, Elk, Deer, Waterfowl and Specialty. Each section has multiple types of calls and 23 overall.
The app also can output to the headphone jack, so you can use it as a speaker jack. The calls themselves are reasonably loud, but probably not loud enough for many hunters’ needs.
As far as the quality, the app does a good job of replicating Primos’ actual products. I spent a good deal of time trying to hunt my cats using Speak the Language, and I was very successful (no cats were harmed in the writing of this review).
On a more serious note, while the app does what it advertises well enough there really isn’t much here. While four dollars for a collection of hunting calls may be a good deal, for an app that’s a little pricy.
The only thing that sets Speak The Language apart from similar apps is that you are given a simulated caller instead of simply a play button. All in all, it’s an average app that will likely disappoint some because of the price.
