Welcome to another installment of Fresh iPhone Games of the Week. We bring you some of the highlights of some of the more interesting games released so you can catch up over the weekend.
Space Miner Blast (iPhone) Free
A spin-off of Space Miner: Space Ore Bust, Space Miner Blast simplifies the RPG/space shooter down to its base elements — flying around in a ship, shooting asteroids and collecting items. Built with some interesting physics controls, you steer your ship with one stick and fire its thrusters with one button, while blasting away the ships guns with another. Your job is to track down asteroids and blow them apart for the ore inside, and use the money you earn to upgrade your ship.
Space Miner includes integration with Game Center for achievements and leaderboard support, and while the base app is free, you can also buy up to three fully-upgraded alternate ships for 99 cents each, or spend $1.99 and get all of them. Any purchase you make also strips the ads from the app as well.
LEGO Creationary (iPhone, iPad) Free
LEGO fanatics, your iPhone game is here. LEGO Creationary is like Pictionary with bricks, and if you like the customizable toys and models LEGO can create, you’ll probably enjoy this simple guessing game.
Players start by rolling a virtual die, which lands on a category of LEGO model — nature, vehicle, building or thing. Then you’ll start to see a model from the category start to be built in front of you, brick by brick. You’ll score points by guessing which of four options the model is, with more points coming from guessing earlier. Creationary ramps up the difficulty the longer you go without missing a right answer, and the app uses more than 300 bricks, making the models pretty complex and hopefully challenging.
Baseball Superstars 2011 (iPhone) $4.99
Cartoony graphics and six game play modes define this baseball game app. In addition to playing through standard games of baseball, you can also run through an entire baseball season, play in home run derbies, and take part in various mission modes that have you completing specific tasks.
You also have the ability to play as a single character or manage a whole team, and Baseball Superstars is full of achievements to unlock. It might be a little more expensive than most games, but there’s lots to do in this game. Baseball fans are going to be busy for a while.
Binx (iPhone) $0.99
Binx is similar to the very popular Angry Birds. It has players aiming a cannon to fire rocks at a distant structure, attempting to dismantle it as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The game stands out with its strong physics system for destroying the block-style buildings, and includes a ton of levels — at least 150 — spread over six aesthetically different worlds. There’s a lot of bang for your buck in this one, so expect to get addicted.
Spider-Man: Total Mayhem HD (iPad) $6.99
There’s already an extremely well-received version of this Spider-Man action game on the iPhone, but today marks the webhead’s debut on the iPad.
Based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, Total Mayhem uses virtual controls to let players battle through several different levels with beat-em-up style combat. You’ll have access to 20 different combo moves with all of Spider-Man’s standard abilities like wall-crawling and web-slinging. Through the course of the game, you’ll fight through 12 different levels and take on six iconic Spider-Man villains.
