SoundTracking iPhone app brings music and social media together

While I turn to music-detection apps like Shazam and SoundHound just a touch less often than I tap that magical Facebook button on my phone, they’re no less indispensable for my iPhone experience. There’s nothing I find as frustrating as hearing a song I really like, but not being able to figure out who sings it. The one thing these apps have missed is the ability to share that experience of discovery.

SoundTracking provides the missing connection I’ve been looking for. In a rather brilliant combination of music-detection software and social media chops, SoundTracking will tell you the name of the artist of the song you’re listening to, then link up to your Facebook, Twitter or Foursquare accounts so you can share it with your friends, along with a brief description of your choosing.

Suppose you want to sell your friends on a song you’re hearing for the first time, you can tag it to Facebook, and tell them exactly what it sounds like to you. For social media addicts who also like music (or vice versa) SoundTracking delivers.

The sign-up process is simple: You quickly sign into your social network of choice, pick a user name, and you’re up and running.

The music ID software used seems as accurate as Shazam or SoundHound, and then there’s the added bonus of being able to add details to your posts. Additionally, if you have friends using the app, you’ll automatically be connected to their music feeds, letting you see what they’re tagging.

About the only thing SoundTracking needs now is an ability to pull up a YouTube video of the song you’re listening to, so if anyone doesn’t know it, he or she can hear it for the first time with the click of a button.

Outside of that, SoundTracking, with its smart integration of social media into the music tagging app genre, just became my new go-to music app. It probably should be yours, too.
