It used to be that you tucked the newspaper under your arm on your way to work. With the iPhone’s New York Times app, you can slip it into your pocket. Why bother dirtying your hands when you can access “All the News That’s Fit To Print” on your sleek mobile device?
The app works in much the same way as the New York Times website, with stories cross categorized by date, subject matter and most viewed. Headlines and story summaries are legible, and it takes just a tap of the finger to jump to the full story. Arrows permit you to read through one article and jump to the next, without returning to the subject menu.
If a particular news item catches your attention, the app allows you to easily save it, or forward it via e-mail to a friend. The text can be enlarged by about 80 percent, so don’t worry about having to pull out your spectacles.
The app’s one downfall is that it provides little room for photographs and the newspaper’s impressive multimedia work. Video and audio are nowhere to be found on the app.
