Sirius XM is trying to regain its relevance as a radio provider but its approach to the iPhone, Sirius XM Premium Online, is not worth your money. With a bevy of free music apps already available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, why should anyone pay for Sirius XM’s offering?
I had Sirius Satellite Radio for two years but canceled after tiring of spending for music I could hear elsewhere for free. But when Sirius XM launched its Premium Online music app in June, I gave the app’s 7-day free trial service a chance.
I was disappointed again, this time in part because of what was missing. There is no Howard Stern and no NASCAR, two reasons I would consider spending a few bucks.
The service is pricey. If you’re not already a Sirius XM customer, the app costs $12.95 per month. If you’re already a customer, using to Sirius XM Premium Online costs an additional $2.99 per month.
Still, 120 channels offer commercial-free music and sports favorites such as Sirius NFL Radio, MLB Home Plate and ESPN Radio. There are solid features, including the ability to tag and purchase songs though iTunes and a live view of current songs playing on each channel.
Some people love satellite radio and I understand that. But on the iPhone, with free streaming apps such as Pandora Radio or Y! Music a download away, Sirius XM offers no value.
