Location-based social networking is the latest phase in the social-networking phenomenon. Instead of having to constantly update your Facebook status as to your whereabouts, foursquare and others automatically pinpoint you on a map for all your contacts to see.
And for Google fanatics, now there is the Google Latitude app (free). Start by extending share invitations to contacts, or accepting invites from others. Your contacts will then appear in real time on a map, allowing you to see their exact location.
The background updating feature allows you to continue to share your location, even if you close the app to use your mobile device for other things.
You also have the option not to share your location by selecting the Hide Your Location feature. You can also switch off the background updating feature so your location is no longer updated once you close out of the app.
The application is very handy if, for example, you’re trying to meet friends at a busy location, and someone is running late. You don’t have to bother with a phone call, because you can see them, and they can see you.
The drawback is, of course, that a contact could potentially track your every move. Hence, if you told your boss your car broke down, when you were really at Starbucks, you might run into some trouble. So add your contacts wisely.
