The free MapHook social networking app takes away the controlled chaos of the FourSquare app and allows anyone, anywhere to “hook” a place as opposed to just checking in. Basically, users have a live feed of “hooks” by MapHook users everywhere that you can sort by categories such as: proximity to your current location, by groups or contacts, and even by categories such as cool places, family, sports, travel and more.
Create your own hooks by selecting a category and title. Select the correct map location and even upload photos of your hook. Hooks can even be tagged to specific places on Yelp and Wikipedia. It’s a more interactive experience than simply checking into a location and leaving a helpful hint. In fact, the creators are calling MapHook a type of location-based journaling experience.
You can even select who your hook is visible to, making MapHook way more privacy friendly than say FourSquare or Yelp. MapHook allows you to create groups of people, like co-workers, family or friends, so you can share your hooks by category.
MapHook is a great app for sharing vacation experiences with friends and family back home. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of users yet, but you if you like FourSquare, you should definitely check out this location-based app for a little bit of a different experience.
