We all have our “types,” and for gay men who prefer big and burly partners, the free Scruff iPhone app is a good place to start.
Promoting itself as a social application for the “gay bear community,” Scruff starts much like any other social networking app or site, with the creation of a profile. Enter details such as ethnicity, occupation and location, and then upload a headshot.
Once that is complete, it’s time to browse. You can view who is currently logged in, as well as who lives in close proximity. If you spot a “bear” that catches you eye, you can “wolf” at him (comparable to “poking” someone on Facebook). Users can also indicate their level of interest in a specific individual. List him as a favorite, and his profile will automatically appear on the top of your homepage.
When mutual interest is expressed, the app will notify both parties and facilitate the opportunity to communicate.
If there is someone that you wish to avoid, you can block him, prohibiting that individual from viewing your profile or contacting you.
Unfortunately, a lot of users on the app provide scant information. And it should be noted that what various users are seeking varies widely — everything from “friendship” to “dirty pictures.”
