Say cheese! with Kodak’s SmileMaker iPhone app

According to Kodak, the world can never have enough smiling faces, and Kodak SmileMaker iPhone app aims to help that theory by taking any photo and adding a new grin.

But, wow — I find this app to be dumb.

SmileMaker boasts “over 20 smiles to choose from” — a fair assessment, I guess, but there are only 21 options, including a pig snout and gorilla lips. Choose or take a photo and then pick your smile. It appears on the photo for you to pinch and pull into the right size. Rotate the mouth by turning your pinching fingers. You can also make the smile lighter or darker to closer match the original image or create a mirror image. After you’re done, save the image to iPhone or upload to Facebook, Twitter or Kodak’s gallery.

The app works well enough, but its just not that funny. Further, it seems that Kodak stopped short of its potential. If the goal was to make an app to help users create humorous pictures, Kodak should have also included other options, be it noses, eyes or accessories.

I could see a young child finding Kodak’s SmileMaker hilarious, but I’d question any adult interest in the app. Well, at least it’s free.
