The free Rhino Musical Aptitude Test iPhone app is a great reminder that you don’t know every single thing about music. Using a graduated difficulty level of questions and a spinning wheel straight out of Wheel of Fortune, Rhino makes for a fun test to see how far your musical aptitude will take you.
Questions are organized five per round, with a total of four rounds of questions. Questions in round one start off easy enough, but even by round two the difficulty increases markedly. You don’t exactly get your choice of categories, which can make it even tougher.
You’ll spin a wheel to determine the decade of the question you’ll have to answer, so if you’re not well-equipped to handle questions on 1960s rock and roll or ’00s R&B, be warned, you might have to suck it up and guess. While Rhino Musical Aptitude Test doesn’t expect you to be up on every single hot new artist, it does offer a pretty good mix of questions on the oldies and newer tunes.
If you find yourself stumped, there’s a system in place to help you out. You can use one of three guitar picks that will reduce the number of possible answers from four to two. Be warned, although the game allows three incorrect answers per round, you only get three guitar picks for the entire game.
If there’s one thing missing from Rhino Musical Aptitude Test it’s variety. Some questions asking players to identify album covers or song clips would be a great way to switch up the monotony of the multiple-choice format.
Similarly, making the game “free,” but hiding any multi-player quiz elements behind a $0.99 paywall feels a bit misleading. It’s not much of a price to pay for a fairly fun quiz game, but it would be more appealing to just pay from the start.
If you’re missing Rock ‘n Roll Jeopardy, but never cared for Mark McGrath, Rhino Musical Aptitude Test is well worth checking out. It’s a fun quiz game that doesn’t pull many punches when it comes to tricky music questions.
