Report: PopCap Games to be acquired for north of $1 billion

In yet another indication that the mobile social gaming space is arguably the most vibrant sector in the global economy, today comes a report from TechCrunch that Seattle-based developer PopCap Games is in the process of being acquired for a figure north of $1 billion.

PopCap, developer of iconic titles including Plants Vs. Zombies and Bejeweled, less than two years ago raised $22.5 million in a Series A round of financing. While social gaming behemoth Zynga would be an obvious suitor of the company, TechCrunch is saying that PopCap’s purchase price was too high and the company could be snapped up by Electronic Arts or another Asian development company.

PopCap, which did explore an initial public offering earlier this year, reportedly has annual revenue between $100 million and $150 million.

Stay tuned for more coverage and analysis of what would be a landmark deal in the mobile gaming space.
