Maybe you just remember “Highlights” magazine from your dentist’s or pediatrician’s waiting room, or maybe you were a devoted subscriber (I know I was), but for more than 50 years, the children’s publication has been churning out hidden pictures. Normally found on page 14 of every issue, the beloved section has gone digital with the Highlights Hidden Pictures iPhone app.
Highlights Hidden Pictures brought back a flood of memories for me. The app is well-designed, offering the image, a toolbar of pictures to find and hints if you get stuck. When you’ve successfully found all the images, the black and white drawing morphs to a four-color picture. I’d like to see Highlights consider some options to increase difficulty for older children, such as turning off hints or not displaying mini images of what’s hidden.
The only real downside of the app is its price. For $2, you only get eight puzzles (an additional two are available for free upon registration). Additional picture packs are planned for release, but at a cost of $2 each. If your child is a voracious hidden picture finder, this will add up quickly.
