Not one for meditation-type exercises, I was a bit skeptical as I began reading up on Mr. Johnson and his hypnotic coaching.
I turned on the app, however, and was instantaneously lulled by the gentle music and Johnson’s soothing Scottish accent. The exercise, Johnson explained, is intended to lead you into a “deep natural state of physical and emotional relaxation.”
He directs you first to focus on your feet, squeezing and then letting go, and allowing a heavy feeling to settle in. The directives then make their way through your body. You are simultaneously instructed to change your breathing into slow deep breaths.
Due to professional propriety, I was forced to go through the relaxation exercise sitting at my desk (I didn’t want my colleagues to worry if I sprawled out on the floor). Nevertheless, I found it completely effective. Within minutes I had forgotten my daily assignments, and I felt as though my brain was being given a gentle massage.
A spa day is a great way to relax, but comes with a big price tag. The Relax app, on the other hand, costs just $2.99 and can be used over and over again. Now that sounds like a good investment.
