First, a word of caution on Rebellion: When the app description says, “This game is designed for iOS 4th generation devices iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4 specifically,” this is not some sort of “runs best under” scenario. Playing Rebellion on an iPhone 3GS is akin to playing a game with half of your screen cut off. It is not impossible, but it seems strange to even want to bother.
I suppose for a better game, trying to play when you literally are unable to see what’s happening on half of the screen would be worth some effort, but not so for Rebellion, a game that suffers from a jarring lack of speed for a game about falling.
That is not even to mention slow load times and the frequent crashing. Rebellion feels like a game that wasn’t thoroughly tested. This is even true of gameplay elements that “work,” like moving your character toward the green orbs the game asks you to collect. Movement is so stilted and slow that orbs you collect might as well be a fraction of their actual size for how many you will get to. This is not a challengingly difficult game, it is a frustratingly difficult game.
If anything can be said in Rebellion’s favor, it’s that it looks quite nice. Your character feels fully formed, and the world he falls through has impressive texture and depth to it. An update would do this game a lot of good, but until that point, there’s no sense in wasting your time or money on a half-finished product.
