If you enjoy a good game of Scrabble, then you will probably enjoy the SpellStacker iPhone app. Each player is given seven letters inscribed on white tiles. The player then has to arrange the tiles on a square board, spelling out a word. Each letter has a point value, and there are spaces on the board that help you boost your points. The goal is to create words that add up to the greatest number of points.
Once you place the tiles on the board, hit “go,” and the app calculates your score. The used tiles are instantly replaced. And, unlike traditional Scrabble, the bonus spaces on the board shift with each play.
SpellStacker allows you to compete as a solo player, with online friends, or with a random opponent. And if you want a little added pressure, you can play with a timer ticking away.
If you get interrupted, you can save games and return to them later.
The app definitely has a dorky feel to it. One of its features is a “morale boost” in the form of silly quotes. Here is an example: “Watching you play SpellStacker is like listening to dreamy music on a sunny summer afternoon.”
