Sometimes an app blows you away because it doesn’t look like anything else out there, but sometimes an app catches your eye because it has a certain “aw shucks” cute factor — a quirkiness missing from your app collection. Storm in a Teacup is a very cute platform game.
Its protagonist, after all, is a storm that floats around in a magical teacup. But the light-hearted visuals extend to the gameplay world, too, where bright greens and yellows are the order of the day. Elements of the world have a sort of pop-up quality to them, similar to the graphics in Little Big Planet, although not quite as impressive. The whole game just feels very welcoming, visually.
The gameplay of Storm in a Teacup is fairly inviting, as well. Platform games are rarely frustratingly difficult these days, and Storm is no exception, but it does pack quite a challenge if you take the time to look for it. Although each level can be completed fairly quickly if your only goal is to get to the end, there are numerous collectible items that are in some pretty hard-to-reach places, even in early, difficult stages.
Collecting these bonus items should provide all the challenge you’ll need. Especially as some of them require a double jump that, in this reviewer’s humble opinion, is inconsistent at best. Either the game’s double jump is so minor that it hardly feels like an extended jump at all or it’s just wildly difficult to perform correctly. Whatever the case, you’ll need to get it down pat if you want to grab every item a level offers.
With only 40 short levels, Storm in a Teacup won’t last a very long time unless you’re really going for total completion, but it is a terrific game of the imagination. Game worlds this exciting and creative are few and far between. If you love a good platformer that will remind you of the sunnier segments of the Super Mario World SNES games, check out Storm in a Teacup.
