PopCap’s popular tower defense game, Plants vs. Zombies, has been an iOS staple for quite a while now, and though it has spread to other platforms such as Android and Windows Phone, it’s still among the most popular titles on the iPhone and the iPad.
The game’s developer aims to keep it that way, and the most recent update to Plants vs. Zombies adds a ton of content that will definitely help. Both the iPhone and the iPad versions of the game received a lot of new content, although advantage definitely goes to tablet users in this case.
As Touch Arcade reports, the new updates feature several new game modes that PopCap has developed for PvZ on other platforms. Both versions have added a mode called Vasebreaker Endless, in which players face a series of vases rather than lines of zombies on their law defense areas. Your goal is to lay down defenses and destroy vases, many of which hide zombies within them. This means you’ll need to carefully consider your strategy as you lay down new plants and make sure you can handle whatever comes out of them. The mode packs nine different levels to play through.
For iPad users, there’s even more goodness on offer. A mode called Zen Garden, in which players earn new plants by playing through the regular game modes and can use them to create a garden. I, Zombie mode puts you on the other side of the zombie conflict, adding nine levels in which players need to help zombies get past plants. And finally, PopCap has thrown in four mini-games to give players something else to do between zombie battles.
It’s worth noting that PopCap is pushing a different angle with the latest updates to Plants vs. Zombies, working with a free-to-play model. For example, downloading the new update to the games nets players the first levels of Vasebreaker Endless and I, Zombie modes, but the remainder have to be purchased using in-game currency.
On the plus side, you’re not just required to purchase PvZ’s coins in order to unlock the levels: you can earn them by playing instead.
