As I sit writing this, there’s pouring rain outside and occasionally it sounds as if trees are about to be ripped from their roots and thrown into my living room. Essentially, it is ideal vacation weather. In fact, if I could get away tomorrow, I would.
I might start with the TripIt – Travel Organizer ($3.99). I love to plan things, but I also like to have help when planning them. TripIt takes your travel details and organizes them into a single itinerary so there’s less time spent checking out various emails or notes you’ve written, and more time spent vacationing. I consider myself very organized but I would gladly pay for something like this to avoid extra hassle on a vacation.
From there, I might use My Vacation ($2.99) to plan out and execute it. I can use the app’s list-making tools to figure out what I plan to see, and then later build a multimedia travel log to show off my awesome vacation to whoever I wanted. I can even share my vacation directly on Facebook, Flickr and other websites right from the app.

But I’d need some apps while I was on the actual vacation, too. Something like TripTrack ($0.99) would provide a great opportunity to live blog my vacation more or less. The app lets you create a journal of your vacation while you’re on it. You can upload photos and mark your current destination down so that your family knows, at the very least, that you haven’t been kidnapped and sold while you wait for Liam Neeson to come save you. That sort of piece of mind you just can’t buy.
And if I was lucky enough to be on a cruise, the Ship Mate app ($1.99) would be ideal. It has pretty much every bit of information you could want about the Carnival cruise lines. You can browse cruise web cams, create custom itineraries, and even chat real-time with the people on your cruise. That sort of thing might be an excellent way to set up a rendezvous with other single cruisers. Not that I’d know anything about that!
But I’m getting way ahead of myself. The fact of the matter is I simply don’t have a vacation planned out just yet. I might be better off just downloading the Days to go WDW app ($0.99) so I can countdown to a Disney vacation I have yet to book. The app churns out daily reminders to let you know the exact number of days until your theoretical trip and sends the alert every day at the time of your choosing. Sounds like the perfect way to daydream at the office, actually.
Now If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to buy some drink-sized umbrellas to stick into my coffee mug.
