Old-school Sherlock Holmes iPhone app’s appeal no mystery

Sherlock Holmes fever is running rampant with the release of the latest reincarnation by Madonna’s ex-husband, Guy Ritchie. The adventure iPhone app (unrelated to the new movie), Sherlock Holmes: The Game is Afoot ($2.99), is modeled after the traditional Holmes stories; but if you ask me, it could use a little spice from the new-age Holmes, played by Robert Downey Jr., and his sidekick Dr. Watson, played by Jude Law.

The puzzles are a little boring with uninteresting graphics. But, if you like a good “I spy” game, you’ll probably enjoy this iPhone app. There are even a few “find the differences in the photos” puzzles in addition to the “I spy”-type puzzles.

The game itself runs like a story, with no apparent menu option if you stop in the middle of a game. Every time you open the iPhone app, you start in the game where you left off last. It does allow you to skip over the story telling and go straight from puzzle to puzzle, if you so please.

Beware if you play the game on the iTouch vs. the iPhone, as each new story has to be downloaded as you play, so an Internet source is required to continue.

Overall, the iPhone app is a fun way to pass the time occasionally and has many puzzles available to keep it fresh. I’ll keep it handy on my iPhone for road trips, but I doubt I’ll be playing this puzzle iPhone app every day.
