Just in time for marathon season comes the just released Nike+ GPS iPhone app to help runners in all skill levels in their training.
The $1.99 app, which taps into the iPhone’s accelerometer and global positioning system technology, allows runners to track their speed, distance and even number of calories burned. Further, integration with Google Maps provides a comprehensive view of the entire run, mapping out trails passed as well as documenting the pace traveled within specific increments.
Runners with short attention spans who like to be entertained while they train can access music from the app’s PowerSongs feature. Others who want to brag about their performance can find an immediate path to Nike’s training community at Nikeplus.com.
Nike should be commended for developing a functional app that can improve the running experience, rather than another splashy commercial packaged in the form of a mobile application. Other worthy iPhone apps from Nike include NikeWomen Training Club and Nike Futbol+. Nike+ GPS is a worthy download for consumers looking to burn off a few pounds, as well as for more serious runners looking to complete 26.2 mile races.
While nothing was announced, expect a similar Android App from Nike in the months ahead. Too bad our iPads can’t fit in our pockets – yet.
