With the stock market hovering around 10,000, it is again safe to open up those 401ks and check in with our portfolios. The brand new NASDAQ Portfolio Manager iPhone app will motivate us to check in more frequently, and, perhaps, make us more educated investors in the process.
Developed by NASDAQ (The National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations), the “QFolio” app is a slick, comprehensive stock tracking tool that provides value for both casual and daily investors. Upon downloading to your iPhone, QFolio lets you read stock performance information about NASDAQ and Apple and search for other companies that you are interested in or that comprise your portfolio. A simple copy and paste function allows you to construct your portfolio within the app, and create a desired “Wish List” for other stocks you are tracking.
While the interface is arguably better than any other stock tracking app available at the iTunes App Store, these features alone aren’t really unique. What truly differentiates QFolio from the pack is how it incorporates Twitter conversations around particular stocks as well as the market at large. Powered by StockTwits, an independent service that uses its own API system to filter and publish tweets around stocks, QFolio is heavily invested in deriving market intelligence via Twitter as opposed to traditional market news sources.
The kinetic nature of stock trading is highly compatible with Twitter, and for that reason alone you should download this app immediately. Still, it would be nice to have easy access to traditional stock coverage if only to compare tweets to squawks (and other sources like CNBC’s Squawk Box). The app just launched over the weekend, so expect more features than what is currently available.
