New iPhone apps worth downloading: Velocity – Speed Reader, Dragon Finga, DuckTales: Scrooge’s Loot

Keeping up with all the interesting news the internet and world have to offer is tough. Especially if you read slowly. That’s why we now have Velocity – Speed Reader, an app specially designed for quick reading. We’ve also got one of the funniest and coolest Kung Fu fighting games to come around in a long time in Dragon Finga, and bizarrely enough, a third person shooter from Disney centered completely around Duck Tales.

Velocity – Speed Reader ($2.99)

What’s it about? Read faster than ever before with an app that feeds you articles one word at a time, lightning fast.

What’s cool? This is just a really neat idea from Lickability. By only showing you one line of text, large and easy to read, and scrolling it by quickly, your brain is able to keep up and digest information faster than it would if all of those words were in one big jumble on a page. With plenty of different speeds and text sizes, you can speed read articles from Instapaper and Pocket, plus you can browse and save articles from the web and other supported apps. They even use a specialized typeface designed for dyslexic readers, which is cool. I love original ideas like this.

Who’s it for? People who want to waste less time of their life reading their daily news.

Dragon Finga (Free)

What’s it about? One of the most silly and unique martial arts brawlers around, with a super fun control scheme.

What’s cool? Developed by Another Place Productions, this Kung-Fu fighting game gives you some of the most direct control ever over your own dragon warrior. The controls and physics have you flinging andlaunching your warrior all over the place, with ragdoll like physics and animation that never stop being hilarious. There are plenty of unique game modes, aside from just brawling missions, and plenty of fighters and unique dragon powers to unlock. The visuals and sound shine with polish, and the Bruce Lee character you start out with is just wonderful.

Who’s it for? People who like unique control schemes and fighting games.

What’s it like? The movement and physics reminds me of To-Fu. Combo Crew is another touch screen unique brawler.

DuckTales: Scrooge’s Loot (Free)

What’s it about? DuckTales (WhooWoo) is back in the world of gaming, and this time it’s a…third person shooter?

What’s cool? Yep! It seems totally random and bizarre, but this is a creative and kid friendly third person shooter. Play as memorable characters like Scrooge McDuck himself, or LaunchPad McQuack, as you go on a cartoon violence filled quest to get Scrooge’s fortune back from the infamous Beagle Boys. There are different game modes, character customizations, four different character classes, and of course, online multiplayer. With this and the recently released HD remake of the classic DuckTales (WhooWoo) on consoles and PC, I’m super happy that Disney is shining it’s light on this franchise again.

Who’s it for? Parents who want their kids to play a youngling friendly shooter. DuckTales (WhooWoo) fans.

What’s it like? Battle Bears Gold is another colorful, slightly more kid friendly shooter. For non kid friendly, check out Shadowgun
