Here are three great iPhone apps to enjoy. Timbre is a location-based app that finds bands playing close by that you may not have heard before. Weathercube presents the local forecast and conditions in a unique way that resembles no other weather app we’ve ever seen. Finally, our game pick today is Linkies, which adds a physics element to its match-three gameplay to create something a bit different.
Timbre (Free)
What’s it about? Timbre is a location-based band discovery app that finds local music and shows for you.
What’s cool? Instead of tedious searching by genre or artist, Timbre automatically locates artists performing near you and starts playing their music. If you like what you hear you can purchase tickets to the show straight from the app. Timbre searches a database of more than 65,000 artists and 75,000 venues, so it shouldn’t have any problems finding a great show nearby.
Who is it for? With its emphasis on finding artists performing nearby, Timbre is clearly aimed at music lovers who enjoy attending live shows.
What’s it like? Other apps like Songkick Concerts can find local shows nearby, as can Ontour. But these apps scour your on-device library to provide their recommendations instead of helping you discover new artists you may never have seen before.
Weathercube ($1.99)
What’s it about? Do you need another weather app? The folks behind Weathercube seem to think so.
What’s cool? Weathercube certainly does look different from other weather apps. It’s a completely gesture-based affair so you just swipe, pinch and tap your way through the weather. It features daily, weekly and detailed hourly forecasts and serves over 1.7 million cities and is available in multiple languages.
Who is it for? If you feel the stock weather offering from Apple isn’t quite cutting it, maybe Weathercube’s unique look and feel will win you over. It’s definitely fun for people who like interactive apps and you can personalize it with different colored themes.
What’s it like? Clearly, there are hundreds of weather apps (many of them free) in the iTunes App Store from big names like The Weather Channel, WeatherBug and AccuWeather, but still, Weathercube’s quirky approach makes it an appealing download.
Linkies ($0.99)
What’s it about? Linkies is a fun match-three game that spices up the gameplay by infusing it with physics.
What’s cool? Though you’re essentially matching three-or-more barrels to make them disappear, you’re not limited to a grid like in Bejeweled. Instead, things are a bit more dynamic as new barrels tumble down the screen once old ones explode. You’re rated on how quickly you can complete each level of which there are 90 across five chapters.
Who is it for? Fans of match-three puzzlers and physics games should enjoy Linkies. It has cute graphics, plenty of content and simple controls. It’s also pretty cool that you can go to linkies.se to see how many times the app has been purchased in real time
What’s it like? Obviously, most match-three games get compared to PopCap’s Bejeweled, but Linkies is also a bit like Mooniz or Push Panic!. The physics element definitely makes it a little different.
