Here are three great iPhone apps to start the week off right. SoulPancake, the brainchild of actor Rainn Wilson where people can ask interesting questions on the deep topics of life and existence, now has it’s own, dedicated iOS app. Chronos for iOS is an intriguing app which works out where and how you’ve been spending your time in case you’re losing track of that kind of thing yourself. Finally, we’ve got Demons’ Score, a rhythm-based action game from Square Enix.
SoulPancake (Free)
What’s it about? The popular website, which enables you to “chew on life’s big questions” now has its very own iPhone app.
What’s cool? Founded by actor Rainn Wilson (Dwight in NBC’s The Office), SoulPancake is a place where people come and talk about stuff that really matters like spirituality, religion, death, love, life’s purpose, creativity and anything else you can think of. It’s simple to log-in with your Facebook account and join the discussion or ask your own questions.
Who is it for? Clearly, fans of the website will be delighted to see an iOS app companion. Any questions you ask via the app will show up on the website and visa versa. Fans of Rainn Wilson’s clever brand of humor will also enjoy checking out SoulPancake.
What’s it like? I suppose the app is a bit like Quora with its questions and answers around various topics. But let’s be honest here: the ones on SoulPancake are far more irreverent, creative and funny and remind me a bit more of the cool stuff you see on iReddit.
Chronos for iOS (Free)
What’s it about? Chronos for iOS is an app that can help you manage your time better and understand how you’re spending your life.
What’s cool? The app taps into your Facebook account and uses background location data, tracking where you’ve been and who you’ve spent time with that day. Your time is auto-categorized as sleep, home, work, social, exercise, errands and in-transit and you can set goals each week or compare categories with friends.
Who is it for? The app was built to make sure that you prioritize the people and things most important to you, because it’s far too easy to lose track of time in everyday life.
What’s it like? While the iTunes App Store is full of time-tracking apps, they’re mostly based around tracking tasks at work or for various projects and rely on you setting timers. Chronos is unique because it works in the background instead, and is more about motivation and setting goals for yourself, a bit like Lift™.
Demons’ Score ($6.99)
What’s it about? Square Enix, best known for their epic Japanese RPGs, just released this rhythm-based shooter with its rather unusual possessive apostrophe placement.
What’s cool? The game plays like an on-rails shooter, but the gameplay is based around rhythm-tapping. Demons’ Score was built using the Unreal Engine, so it looks very impressive indeed. There are plenty of battles to suck you in and challenging boss fights to endure. Once you complete a stage in Story mode, you can purchase the powers of the boss demon that you defeated.
Who is it for? The game has that Japanese anime vibe familiar from most Square Enix games, but it will mainly appeal to fans of rhythm/music games. Its battle element (as you take on various different enemies) may mean Demons’ Score also appeals to fans of fighting games, too. There’s some criticism, however, that you don’t get much for your $6.99 and that the game resembles a demo. In-app purchases are pushed heavily once you succeed to unlock everything, so bear this in mind before you buy it.
What’s it like? There are plenty of good rhythm and music games in the App Store, but Demons’ Score kind of resembles Elite Beat Agents on Nintendo DS.
