Slayin update ($0.99)

What’s it about? Super-simple arcade game Slayin has players guide a character around flat, 2-D levels trying to stay alive as long as possible amid a horde of enemies.

What’s cool? Slayin takes a lot of classic elements from action-adventure and role-playing games and breaks them down to their simplest elements. Your character holds a weapon in front of him or her and walks forward endlessly, so your job is to control direction and jumping while trying to kill all the level’s enemies with your weapon. You’ll also need to pick up money from the ground as you play, which can be spent to upgrade your weapons and armor, and fight off various, often huge bosses. Slayin’s latest update adds three new characters – an archer, a ninja and a beast tamer – as well as new weapons for players to try.

Who’s it for? Players who like fast, intense, deceptively simple gameplay will want to grab Slayin and hone their survival skills and reflexes.

What’s it like? For another game that keeps it simple but action-packed, try Nimble Quest.

YesSir ($1.99)

What’s it about? Invaders besiege your country and you’ll have to use smart judgment and careful attacks to fight them off in turn-based strategy game YesSir.

What’s cool? Players control a tank in side-scrolling artillery game YesSir, taking turns against invading forces and using artillery fire to ward off enemies. Your goal in each 2-D level is to carefully fire your weapons in order to hit your targets, accounting for things like wind, elevation, and other factors that can affect how your shots fall. Over time, you’ll unlock new weapons, ranging from lasers to nukes, but the invaders’ strength increases along with you, so you’ll have to maximize your efficiency and planning in order to stay alive.

Who’s it for? Fans of turn-based artillery games will find lots of levels to work through in YesSir.

What’s it like? Similar strategy titles are available in Worms and Worms 2: Armageddon.
