We’re starting this week’s haul of apps worthy of your attention with MixBit, a video-recording app created by former founders of YouTube, which allows users to quickly create videos, share them and collaborate on them with other users. We’ve also got two games for your attention: The Wolf Among Us is up first, a game based on the “Fables” comic from Telltale Games, the creator of 2012’s phenomenal The Walking Dead: The Game. And second is Warlords RTS, a real-time strategy game in which players must carefully choose which forces to take into battle throughout its single-player campaign.
MixBit (Free)
What’s it about? Create videos with your iOS devices with MixBit, an app that creates videos out of short clips that users can upload, remix and share.
What’s cool? MixBit was created by the former founders of YouTube, and the app looks to continue to make video easy for anyone to create and share. The app lets you shoot videos as long as an hour with your iOS devices, and makes editing them easy by breaking them into 16-second clips that can be quickly rearranged to create something new. The app also supports collaboration with other users by letting you upload your work to the MixBit website, where other users can add to it, remix clips, and more. You can also share your MixBit videos to social networks such as Facebook and Twitter straight from the app.
Who’s it for? Anyone who likes making videos with their mobile devices, as well as potentially collaborating with a larger community, should try MixBit.
What’s it like? Make and edit more videos with iMovie, or create short, shareable ones with Vine.
The Wolf Among Us ($4.99)
What’s it about? Following developer Telltale Game’s successful (and awesome) point-and-click adventure game The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us pulls players into the comic book world of “Fables.”
What’s cool? Based on the popular comic series by Bill Willingham, The Wolf Among Us is a point-and-click adventure game that features the exploits of Biggby Wolf – otherwise known as the Big Bad Wolf – as he works to solve a murder mystery in Fabletown, New York. The premise of “Fables” finds characters from legend and fairytale banished from their world into our reality, where they work to avoid being found out by regular people as they go about their lives. Like last year’s phenomenal The Walking Dead from the same developer, The Wolf Among Us asks players to make choices about how the story will play out, and their decisions alter the way events can happen.
Who’s it for? Fans of “Fables” and The Walking Dead will definitely want to check out The Wolf Among Us, but you don’t have to be a fan of the comics to be engaged by the gameplay and mature story – but it’s probably a little too adult and violent for kids.
What’s it like? Definitely check out Telltale’s other titles, The Walking Dead and Puzzle Agent.
Warlords RTS ($0.99)
What’s it about? Real-time strategy game Warlords RTS has players choosing their troops and fielding an army to take down various foes by giving orders and using their forces smartly and strategically.
What’s cool? Like other titles in the real-time strategy genre, Warlords RTS doesn’t have you controlling a single warrior, fighting on the ground, but instead puts you in control of an entire army as its commander. That means you’ll need to send your troops to the right places at the right times, give them orders to help them win battles, and build up bases that will augment their abilities. Which units you choose to take into battle is a big decision to make, as all your forces have different strengths and weaknesses and can seriously change how your battles play out. You’ll also have magic scrolls and spells to give you an edge in combat, and come up against fierce bosses through the course of working through Warlords RTS’ single-player campaign.
Who’s it for? If you like strategy titles, check out the deep single-player campaign Warlords RTS has on offer.
What’s it like? Other great RTS titles include LandGrabbers and Apoc Wars, so you might want to grab those as well.
