What’s it about? Hello Vino is first and last stop on the road to wine enlightenment, designed for even the most novice wine drinkers to use with ease.
What’s cool? Everybody has to start somewhere when it comes to wines and all their fancy foreign names. What wine goes with what food? What about holiday or random other occasion specific wines?Hello Vino has you covered with reviews, recommendations, and even a wine label scanner. The app recently underwent a total overhaul, rebuilt from the ground up for speed and reliability, with a lovely new design to go along with it. Other new features include insider wine deals, and even audio pronunciations to help you seem more refined and cultured when ordering your wine!
Who’s it for? People who want to learn more about wine, or just generally broaden their palate.
What’s it like? If Hello Vino doesn’t quite cut it, you could follow it up with a nice glass of Plonk.
Call of Duty: Strike Team ($6.99)
What’s it about? It’s the first ever fully fleshed out Call of Duty game on iOS, with all the gun toting, explosions, and Michael Bay-esque plot you’d ever need.
What’s cool? Coming totally out of left field and surprising everyone, especially since the last CoD games to come out on iOS are a couple years old, Strike Team is a fully fledged original entry in the franchise. It actually feels like a Call of Duty game, with the same smooth first person shooting, heavily scripted, cinematic, explosion laden levels, and online ranking system with perks and unlockables you could want. Plus there are loads of control options to help compensate for the full on assault of virtual buttons. You can even use a tactical, overhead, third person mode to give your squad different commands mid firefight; something never seen on the console versions. I’m thinking the Modern Combat dev’s are feeling a little shaky right about now…
Who’s it for? Gamers. Pretty much all of them. But more specifically, shooter fans.
What’s it like? Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies previously gave us a small slice of the Call of Duty pie. Likewise, you can check out the Modern Combat franchise from Gameloft for a solid imitation.
2K Drive ($6.99)
What’s it about? 2K Drive is the big new simulation racer on the block, focusing on high fidelity visuals and highly realistic gameplay and vehicle behavior.
What’s cool? Games like Forza and Gran Turismo pretty much have the simulation racer niche covered on consoles. 2K Sports has decided to try their luck on mobile instead, with this crazy polished and crazy good racer, which boasts real licensed cars, “authentic driving environments,” and “console quality graphics.” All of that is pretty much true. This is a high quality racer with lots of content, unlockables, and even multiplayer. It also offers a lot of customization options for your car and driver, and you can even transpose your actual face onto your driver with RaceFace. It even has a live news feed regarding big goings on in car culture.
Who’s it for? Racing fans who like a little more realism and a little less arcade in their games.
What’s it like? The Real Racing franchise has been the place to go for this type of racer before now.
