Today we hail the return of Google Maps to the iOS fold, complete with new features that make it worthy of standing against Apple’s offering. Following that is Showyou, a video search app with thousands to watch, and an update to the “Stargate: SG-1” fan app Stargate Command that adds a new game to the mix.
Google Maps (Free)
What’s it about? Google’s Maps app is back in the iTunes App Store, bringing new features like turn-by-turn directions.
What’s cool? When Apple switched its default maps app on iOS devices from Google Maps to Apple’s own Maps software, a lot of people were disappointed to see the original go. Like Apple’s app, the Google Maps app now sports voice-guided turn-by-turn directions. You can also sync Google Maps with your Google account and import search terms and results from your computer, and access Google Street Views of various locations.
Who’s it for? Google Maps is definitely for those who are unhappy with Apple’s attempt at a maps app.
What’s it like? Also worth a look are MapQuest and Maps+ for alternatives to Google and Apple’s offerings.
Showyou (Free)
What’s it about? Showyou makes finding videos from a variety of sources around the Internet easy, and allows users to stream lots of different video content straight to their iOS devices.
What’s cool? Searching for videos gets a little easier with Showyou, which will sources like YouTube, TED, Vimeo and others to help you find the exact videos you want. The app is all about making it easy to find and watch videos, and syncing it with your Twitter and Facebook accounts opens a number of additional cool options – like the ability to track through videos posted on those social networks by your friends, for starters. You can also quickly and easily share videos on Facebook and Twitter through the app, or just browse through thousands of hand-picked videos to find something to watch yourself.
Who’s it for? If you like to consume a lot of video on your iPhone or iPad – and share it with others – Showyou is definitely for you.

Stargate Command update (Free)
What’s it about? Stargate Command is an app for fans of the TV show Stargate: SG-1, with a new update that adds a dueling game that’s similar to Infinity Blade.
What’s cool? First off, the update to Stargate Command adds an in-app purchase for the 99-cent game “Teal’c’s Revenge,” which puts players in the role of the ass-kicking alien Teal’c from the show. The game has players face off against Jaffa baddies (those are the guys who war the Anubis helmets in the TV show and movie) by fighting them with his staff in a one-on-one duel. Players have to dodge and parry attacks before striking themselves in sword-fighting style. The app also contains another golfing mini-game, and a 3-D section that lets players walk around the Stargate Command center, investigating different props from the show and learning a little about each one.
Who’s it for? This is definitely an app geared toward fans – if you’re into Stargate: SG-1, you should spend a few minutes reminiscing (and beating down bad guys) with Stargate Command.
What’s it like? “Teal’c’s Revenge” draws a lot of inspiration from the Infinity Blade series, so try that if you want something similar.
