New iPhone apps worth downloading: Fuelzee, CoverMe update, Anomaly 2

Save some money this week with our first app worth downloading today, Fuelzee. Finding gas prices in your area, it helps you save on fuel, while also earning rewards for reporting prices so other users can save as well. We’ve also got CoverMe, a private messaging app that protects your sensitive calls, texts, photos and more, and Anomaly 2, a “tower assault” title in which players control a convoy of military vehicles as they smash through an alien race’s tower defenses.

Want apps that can help you find cheap gas? Try these.

Fuelzee (Free)

What’s it about? Fuelzee is all about saving money by finding gas where it’s cheapest in your area, and offering rewards for using different brands.

What’s cool? The great idea behind Fuelzee is that it turns everyone using the app into a potential source of information about cheap gas prices. On the one hand, the app acts as a way to help you find cheap gas wherever you are, by mapping the stations near you and displaying their prices. But the app can also save you money by offering rewards for helping add information to its catalog. You can earn points toward rewards by reporting gas price listings near you, and then redeem those points for things like gift cards and coupons. You can also share great gas prices and the rewards you earn with your friends across social networks.

Who’s it for? Snag Fuelzee if you’re looking to save money on gas and like the idea of helping others do so, as well.

What’s it like? YP Local Search and Gas Prices also provides some money-saving info on gas, as does RoadNinja.

CoverMe update (Free)

What’s it about? Protect your messaging with CoverMe, a security app that makes it easy to lock up and guard things you don’t want others to have access to on your iPhone or iPad.

What’s cool? There are things you might say or send to your friends and family that are better kept private, and that’s just what secure messaging app CoverMe means for them to be. The app protects things like sensitive videos and photos or messages you might send or receive, and allows you to make secure phone calls, send self-destructing messages, and recall messages you send – or even wipe them out remotely. You can also secure documents, notes and other files in a “vault” that’s protected by the app, and CoverMe allows you to hide contacts, call logs and messages, as well. The app’s latest update brings iOS 7 optimization and new features, like the ability to share private notes with other users.

Who’s it for? If you’re looking for a way to keep your messages and interactions with others private, check out CoverMe.

What’s it like? Grab Bonfyre and Privatext for more apps that allow messaging on the DL.

Looking for even more tower defense games? Try these.

Anomaly 2 ($4.99)

What’s it about? Guide a convoy of powerful military vehicles through enemy territory in Anomaly 2, the latest in the franchise of “reverse tower defense” strategy games.

What’s cool? Like the earlier Anomaly games before it, Anomaly 2 is something of a tower assault title – instead of building towers to defend your territory against encroaching waves of enemies, you play as a small convoy of vehicles moving through enemy towers and taking them out along the way. Your job is to plan the appropriate route, change your convoy’s makeup to deal with changing threats, upgrade your vehicles over time, and dispatch special weapons and distractions to keep your men alive. Anomaly 2 packs some awesome graphics, especially for a mobile title, but keep in mind that those visuals mean it performs less well on older-model iOS devices, like the iPhone 4.

Who’s it for? Fans of tower defense titles will want to check out Anomaly 2’s interesting take on the genre and different strategy elements.
