We’re kicking off today’s Apps Worth Downloading list with Blinkist. It’s great for users who have a backlog of nonfiction books, like those for business, that need reading but no time to read them: Blinkist provides short, useful summaries of books that you can get through in minutes. We’ve also got some great games to help you waste time this week: First is the updated Jetpack Joyride, an endless runner that has added new vehicles and costumes to unlock. Finally comes The Last Door, a point-and-click adventure title that’s heavy on horrific atmosphere.
Blinkist update (Free)
What’s it about? Blinkist brings users shortened versions of nonfiction books to help them get the important concepts quickly and easily, without having to read the whole book.
What’s cool? Ever had your boss recommend a book on business that you absolutely must read, and then realize when she brings it up again that you totally forgot to read it? Blinkist can help with that. It’s something like CliffNotes for nonfiction books, bringing users “blinks” of various books that let them get some of the most information about of them in a mere 15 minutes. Blinkist’s blinks are written by experts in their fields, so you can be sure you’ll be getting only the most useful info from each one. Just note that you’ll need a monthly subscription to go with the app. Blinkist’s latest update squashes some bugs and opens up more language options for readers.

What’s it like? For some alternative means of getting information out of books (other than reading them), try CliffNotes Study Guides and Audiobooks from Audible.
Jetpack Joyride update (Free)
What’s it about? Endless runner Jetpack Joyride puts players in the straps of a jetpack powered by machine guns as they go blasting through a laboratory, avoiding obstacles for as long as possible.
What’s cool? Like all endless runners, Jetpack Joyride is about staying alive as long as you can, but instead of running and dodging obstacles and dangers, you have a jetpack that lets you rise up and down as you rocket through a strange science lab. The game also includes tons of vehicle power-ups that give you new ways to play – you’ll ride a giant mechanical dragon, zip around the room in a teleporter, and alter gravity with the gravity suit. It’s all in service of collecting coins and gaining power-ups, gadgets and other goodies that can make you last longer and go farther. Jetpack Joyride’s latest update adds the S.A.M., a huge robot vehicle, Santa’s sleigh, a bunch of new costumes to unlock and daily challenges.
Who’s it for? If you like endless runners, Jetpack Joyride is one of the best, with lots to do.
What’s it like? Other great runners include Temple Run 2 and Polara, so check those out as well.
The Last Door – Chapter 1: The Letter (iPad) (Free)
What’s it about? A horror title that relies on story and atmosphere over graphics, The Last Door tells the story of a man who ventures to a friend’s home after receiving a strange letter.
What’s cool? The Last Door is a point-and-click adventure game with super low-res graphics, but don’t let the look fool you – it’s actually a pretty creepy horror game with a lot of atmosphere. The episodic title takes place in Victorian England, and has players trying to solve a mystery after the main character’s friend commits suicide. Puzzles abound as players investigate the man’s home, and you’ll have to use your head to advance through the game’s story.
Who’s it for? Players who like horror titles and games that focus on story and carry a horror twist will want to give The Last Door a shot.
