The free NetworkGlobal News app is an all-video news app with a heavy international focus.
Categories include “Global,” “African” and “The Middle East.” Most of the coverage focuses on politics, civil war, strife, famine, and human rights issues. It is a bit heavy on images of starving children in underdeveloped countries, to be sure, but it’s stuff that we could all be a little more aware of.
Recent headlines include a measles outbreak in Zambia and the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan, post-flooding. There is also the odd video in Spanish, although it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the subject country (there is Spanish-language coverage of Africa).
One of the app’s most unique features is that it streams United Nations Television live. That means that whatever is happening at UN headquarters in New York City is viewable on your iPhone, which is pretty cool if Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or some other world leader is speaking to the General Assembly or Security Council.
Among the app’s shortfalls, however, is a lack of bylines and citation; the videos don’t name reporters or producers. It would be nice to know who is making the news, and give them credit where credit is due. Really, there is no description of what NetworkGlobal News is, so the app must be viewed with a critical eye.
