This week’s top iOS apps list lead off with an update that will be vital to movie watchers concerned about eating up their monthly allotment of data. The other apps on our list are similarly useful, including an app to make Twitter a little bit more organized, and apps for sports fans, space fanatics and newlyweds.
Netflix (Free, requires subscription)
Netflix has come out with a nice update for those concerned about going over their data limits. While previously the Netflix app was content to stream off your 3G connection and eat away your valuable data in seconds, the update now makes the app much more W-iFi friendly. Wi-Fi connections will be remembered so they’re easier to connect to, and if the option is selected, the app simply won’t stream if you’re not on a Wi-Fi signal. Sure, it might be frustrating for users who really want to stream when they’re not near Wi-Fi, but the benefit they’ll receive from not blowing up their data charges could be well worth it.
Quip ($0.99)
I am as big a Twitter advocate as you can find, but one thing that I’ll admit can become tiresome in a hurry is trying to make heads or tails of a conversation between two or more people. If another party replies to the thread without staying on topic, it can become a mess in a hurry. Quip attempts to fix this problem by condensing conversion threads so they stay on topic and they’re easier to read. Quip also keeps three unique filters – one for tweets that have images, one for tweets that have been retweeted at least five times, and another for tweets that are part of a conversation.
Sports Republic (Free)
Sports Republic provides another avenue for getting the latest in sports news. While that might not necessarily seem essential, it never hurts to have strong new competition in the sports app market. What distinguishes Sports Republic from its competition is the ability to customize the content on the app so you’re only following the sports that you care about. You can also get alerts tied to specific topics and share any of the stories you read via email, Twitter and Facebook. Sports Republic also comes packed with articles from other sources so you have plenty of opportunity to get your fill of news from across the sporting landscape.
Earthlapse ($0.99)
NASA might be pretty quiet in the news but Earthlapse will give you your space fix. The app showcases eight interactive time lapse scenes taken from space by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. It comes with an ambient soundtrack, a clock and weather for the entire world. Users can control the speed of the videos by swiping on the iPhone screen, seeing exactly what they want to see when they want to see it.
Wedding & Gift Registry by Crate & Barrel (Free)
Summertime is wedding season, and Create & Barrel have couples covered with the Wedding & Gift Registry app. Couples can create C&B registries right from the app and edit them at any time. Once the registry has been created, the app will monitor which items have been purchased off the registry in case it needs to be altered later on for any reason. While users can search for products to add to the registry on the app, they can also scan barcodes if they’re already in a Crate & Barrel store.
