NeedyMeds Drug Discount Card, one of several iPhones apps that focuses on perscription drugs, can save users up to 75 percent on pharmaceuticals regardless of sex, age, income or insurance coverage.
NeedyMeds, the Massachusetts-based nonprofit that created the app, says its iPhone “discount card” is accepted at 53,000 pharmacies nationwide, including most big chains.
The app is a digital version of the organization’s paper discount drug card. Turn it on and all you will see a single screen with several long prescription numbers. Tap the arrow at the bottom right-hand corner, and the ‘card’ flips over to the other side, which reads “simply present this card to a participating pharmacy to receive a discount on your prescription.”
A little skeptical? So was I. But when I walked into my local Rite Aide, the pharmacist confirmed I could use the NeedyMeds iPhone app to purchase prescription drugs from the store at a lower price. The card can even be used for pet medications, but it cannot be used in conjunction with an insurance program.
Also, the app warns that the card is not valid for Medicaid or Medicare patients.
Even if your pharmacy doesn’t accept the NeedyMeds discount card, it costs you nothing to try and save money.
