Fans of NBC’s Today Show will want to pick up Today for iPad to ensure a daily fix of hosts Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry and Al Roker.
Today for iPad works equally well in landscape and portrait orientations. From the main screen, you can browse clips by show date or by topic, scrolling down for older shows or additional categories, and scrolling across to see all the available clips. Tapping a thumbnail will open a brief description of the clip, so you can determine if it’s worth watching. Although there is an option to play all clips, I wish there was a way to expand all the descriptions at once — I found that the displayed photo did not always perfectly correlate with the subject matter, which might cause users to miss out on interesting segments.
When playing a video in landscape mode, you can view the clip in full screen, but you should know that the video quality appears to be low-resolution at this size. I preferred to watch clips at half-screen size with my iPad in portrait. Playing videos with the iPad vertical also opens the app for multi-tasking. Users will see a list of related stories that can be read while the video plays. Photo galleries from the same news category are also listed in the sidebar. I enjoyed flipping through these images, but was a bit disappointed that they could not be made full-screen. Nonetheless, I appreciated the option of multi-tasking my news consumption, and think busy individuals will feel similarly.
I didn’t see any search function in the app’s native sections, but through the Today.com link at the top of the screen, users can access the show’s regular website and all of its corresponding sections and features.
