No one is quite certain who gets the official honor, but it seems as though the world’s population has hit the 7 billion mark after the birth of a baby girl in the Philippines, a baby boy in Russia or baby Nargis in India on Oct. 31. That’s a whole lot of people, and National Geographic has launched the free iPad app 7 Billion to celebrate the milestone.
7 Billion is free for a limited time, and it’s definitely an app worthy of your time. You can only use 7 Billion in landscape mode, but the newsmagazine is jam-packed with information regarding population history, population growth and what effect it will have on the environment as the world is expected to grow to a population of 9 billion by 2045.
In addition to National Geographic’s signature storytelling, users will also find stunning photography — images worth a look even if the population discussion isn’t of particular interest to you. The app also features short videos and graphics to better explain the impact of such a large population. I particularly enjoyed the article that explained how soap operas in Brazil contributed to a drop in birth rates — a factor I previously wouldn’t have considered.
Sponsored by DuPont, 7 Billion will see an update next month with an added feature. With continued updates, there’s no reason not to download 7 Billion. Grab it today, before the price increases.
