Defender Chronicles – Legend of The Desert King
With each update, this game gets better and better. Now with in-app purchases of gold and some items to help you get going, it’s gotten even better. Each stage you have a different tower defense setup, and in the beginning, I didn’t think the “hero” (there are two, General and Melwen) made any difference. Now, I see it very differently. Having played this game a LOT, it’s pretty much my current top game, and I’ve come back to it time and again, it’s replay-ability is very high.
It has RPG and tower defense elements, which are my two favorite genres and combined well, they are made for my ongoing enjoyment.
Castle War
I love this game’s progressive difficulty, the very tight line you must hold in order to advance with enough crystal to upgrade your troops. Upgrading your troop’s abilities is the main point of strategy in this game, and then a further challenge is making effective use of your gold during the game. Adding to that is that each class has specific abilities that must be used during each battle and those abilities must be activated for EACH unit. It seems like a lot, but they are just advancing across the screen from left to right. If you had to do that in a 3D way, you’d have Warcraft all over again. This game is a lot like Warcraft strategy-wise, and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.
Plants vs. Zombies
BRAAAIINNNSSS. Everything about this game is great. The sound design, the artwork, the balanced gameplay, replay-ability, the plant upgrades, everything. As your opponents have more defensive capabilities, you gain some further plant offensive to help offset that. I find myself smiling every time I hear “We’re Coming” in that polite zombie voice. In this cartoony world, this sort of politeness is the perfect foil to whatever violence you might think is hidden underneath those zombies. They are drawn too silly to take them seriously and eat your plants instead of brains. In other combinations, this could have gone wrong, but the tone they’ve struck in this game is exactly right on all fronts.
geoDefense Swarm
Basically, this game is a classic. I obsess over a particular stage for a while, then I can put the game down for a while, but it will only be a matter of time before I come back to it again…
Mr. Driller
I have found this game to be so simple and so delightful that I always come back. Also, it’s a game any young child can grab from me and play should I need a quick distraction- even if they’ve never played it before. I use this app to show me how relaxed I am. If I am relaxed, I can drill down deep quickly with little effort, and if I am not, it’s much much harder somehow. A great pick-up and play because I have a few minutes to kill waiting in line or for someone. I never get tired of it.
