MusicBunk! is trying to set itself up as some sort of portal where friends can share clips of songs with each other. The problem with apps that rely specifically on sharing is that digital music sites like Spotify offer up a practically endless library of full-length songs on the cheap, so MusicBunk! feels like an idea whose time has passed.
For starters, an app that relies on its own users sharing songs with each other needs actual users to share those songs. MusicBunk!, in its infancy, just doesn’t have the built in cache right now. So instead of your friends with like-minded tastes letting you sample some of their MP3 stock, you get dudes sharing a Foo Fighters song mixed in with a ton of artists you don’t know and then, oh hey, an Oasis song. It all feels really incomplete right now.
Even if you find songs you want to listen to, they’re only available in 30 second clips. While that would’ve been fine a few years ago, users have been streaming full-length songs off of sites like Pandora, Napster and Spotify for years now. A short clip simply won’t suffice.
That’s too bad, because the simple, clean layout of MusicBunk! seems like it would be fun to use if it had a different end goal. If you could make playlists with full length songs and share them with friends, for instance, or do anything besides stream short clips from a group of total strangers.
While part of those issues are beyond MusicBunk!’s immediate control, I don’t think this app has much of a shot of catching on in the long run, either.
