America’s obsession with weight loss has created an entire industry around diet gurus, diet books, diet foods and diet videos. Among the most famous is Dr. Robert Atkins and his Atkins diet, which champions a no-carb approach as the answer to unwanted pounds.
But for those who can’t give up their breads and pastas, there is the CarbLovers Diet iPhone app (free), which promises to help you trim down a different way.
The app purports to let you “lose all the weight you want, while enjoying the foods you love.” It includes a weight tracker, and a thorough explanation of why eating healthy carbs is a good weight-loss option.
The CarbLovers Diet app also includes loads and loads of healthy meal ideas, broken down by breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. Among the more interesting ones I came across were potato gnocchi with walnut-arugula pesto and coconut date truffles.
Going out to eat? The app includes recommendations for those times when you’re out and about, and can’t count beans at home.
My favorite of the app’s many features is the carb swap guide, which is a sort of picture game, wherein you’re presented with two food items, and you have to decide which is the healthier carb. Grape-nuts or Meusli? Meusli. Pear or banana? Banana. You learn some interesting stuff, even if you’re not on a diet.
