More info on New York sports than you ever thought possible

If you can manage to stifle your snark when you first see ESPNNewYork.com and wonder aloud, “What makes this different from espn.com?” what you’ll find is a comprehensive rundown of everything New York sports-related.

From a main screen that boasts the top New York sports stories of the day to buttons for team schedules, team blogs, stadium info, ESPN Radio streams and Twitter feeds, there isn’t a stone left uncovered.

Of particular note are the very cool ESPN SportsCenter highlight packages ‑ three-minute videos centered around the latest action in NYC. Or, if you’re looking for a radio feed, you can listen to the latest ESPN Radio SportsCenter update, which is new every 20 minutes.

Unfortunately, the ESPNNewYork.com app is not exactly optimized for 3G coverage. The load time on most of these features is far too long unless you’re on a wifi connection. That certainly dampens enthusiasm for what has been accomplished here ever so slightly, but not enough to warrant serious concern.

While I’d expect the blogs to be comprehensive, it’s surprising how much information there is on the stadiums, too. Pages of data on New Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. You could lose yourself in that one small section alone.

If you care at all about sports in New York, this free app is a complete no-brainer. Fans of other ESPN city-specific web sites should be on the lookout for their city’s app, because if they’re anything like ESPNNewYork.com, they’re well worth the time.
