Monster Dash for iPhone is a lot like the first level of Super Mario Bros. – running, jumping over gaps and dodging enemies – except it’s much simpler, but equally as addictive.
The iPhone Games app puts you in control of a character who runs through levels such as the Great Wall of China. You don’t control his running, which gradually increases speed, but you do control his ability to jump. Basically, you’re primarily dodging holes in the ground and spikes in your path.
At the same time, various monsters – vampires, zombies, demons and mummies – are appearing on the path in front of you. You can jump them, jump onto them, or shoot them with your gun. The game features various weapons you can find along the way, but they have the same level of power as your default shotgun. The difference is the way they fire and the range the bullets cover. So as your little guy goes hurdling forward, trying not to fall to his death, you’re blasting away at monsters to keep them out of your way. Hit too many monsters or too many spikes and you lose. Fall off the path and you lose. Your goal is to get as far as possible.
That’s it.
Surprisingly for such a simplistic, repetitive game, Monster Dash isn’t boring. It starts fast, gets you right into the action, and challenges you to last longer than the last time. Because of this, it’s a great game to snag for killing time waiting for a bus, for example.
