Mobile World Live iPhone app tune you in to events and news

If you’re reading this app review, or any app reviews really, you probably have some interest in staying up to date on the business and innovations taking place in the mobile marketplace. If that’s the case, the Mobile World Live app is an easy download to make.

That’s especially true with the 2011 Mobile World Congress just around the corner, beginning Feb. 14 through the Feb. 17. The Mobile World Congress brings together the GSMA, a collection of 800 mobile operators and 200 other related companies to discuss innovations in the mobile market, and Mobile World Live’s app appears primed to cover the events from all sides.

The Mobile World Live app handles a wealth of information, and splits it into easy-to-digest buttons, making it easier to grab the info you’re looking to see. There are buttons on the app to go to live video feeds, news specific to the GSMA, news specific to the mobile business world and news specific to the Mobile World Congress, not to mention news focused solely on apps themselves.

Each of the buttons leads to a newsfeed with links to longer articles. The layout is clean and simple, and the links to the full stories load quickly. It would be preferable if the stories were self-contained within the app, as the color layout in Mobile World Live is easier to read than the white background used by many of the off-site links, but they’re by no means unreadable.

In addition to the mobile stories and live feeds, there is also a video archive of previous live coverage for users to scroll through. If you’d fallen behind on some mobile events it’s an easy way to get the Cliff Notes on some of the larger announcements.

If there’s any frustration with Mobile World Live, it’s that not all of the app is immediately accessible. There are some discussion forums and MWC social networking features that require a registration process. Creating an account is free and simple, but it’s still one more step between communication.

Still, if you’re going to get invested in reading about mobile news, you might as well do so completely, and Mobile World Live makes it extremely easy to do just that. Its clean, easy-to-use layout and wealth of video and text make this a top-notch mobile news app.
