Whether I’m in a new city or just hungry in my own backyard, MenuPages is one of my most-accessed apps. The website-turned-app, available for iPhone and iPod Touch, isn’t new to the App Store, but its usefulness when seeking out good eats is indispensable — don’t you hate it when you Google a menu, only to find it’s presented in Flash? I do.
MenuPages can be used to find a specific restaurant using its search bar, or users can rely on their GPS location to view dining establishments nearby. The app will also search menus based on cuisine, meal type or for a specific food (want fried chicken or sushi? MenuPages will narrow its results accordingly). If you don’t care what you eat, but need to eat it in a specific location, choose a neighborhood for MenuPages to focus on. The app can also provide results for restaurants with certain features, such as “great views,” open 24 hours, Wi-Fi or a happy hour.
All of the results will be pinned on a zoomable map (or in list format). You can opt to tap the pins or use the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen to see which restaurant is where. Tapping into a pin will display tabs and information for location details, star ratings, user reviews and, of course, the menu. Although the company makes no guarantee that the menu is current, I’ve never been let down, based on a menu anyway. When viewing menus, it will morph into full screen, so you’ll need to tap the screen once to return to your options. If a restaurant supports OpenTable, you’ll be able to make a reservation through the service in app.
MenuPages doesn’t support all of the U.S., but if you find yourself visiting or living in New York City; Boston; Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco; Philadelphia; South Florida, or Chicago, this is an app you’ll want to download.
