Depending on the audience that finds it, Men in Black 3 is about as likely to delight as it is to frustrate, or just plain bore. But there is a real game at its core, and younger gamers may find it provides an easy entrance into the complex genres that MiB 3 touches.
Stylistically, Men in Black 3 plays like a cross between the task-list obsessed The Sims FreePlay and strategy games like PC favorite StarCraft with much less gunfire. MiB3 isn’t quite as passive as The Sims, thanks in part to action sequences that break up sections of the game where a player has to build a gun shop and then wait 15 minutes to equip a gun. But it’s also not nearly as strategically inclined as a game like StarCraft where various alien races are fighting one another with clearly defined strengths and weaknesses.
While that may frustrate more experienced gamers, I think it works as a great teaching tool for younger players. They can dip their toes into what can be intimidating gaming waters to find out which genre they would like to explore more closely, without having to invest in a whole other game.
The rest of Men in Black 3 is, at the very least, acceptable. The game’s constant instructions handhold throughout, and the story, while not particularly engrossing, has fun elements from the movies that give it a bit of added charm. If you’re a MiB completist, this is a game worth checking out, but hardcore gamers can probably stay away.
