Telling people what you’re doing, at what time and with whom, doesn’t seem to be enough for social networking junkies anymore. Now, for those into full disclosure, you can also tell them where you are, right down to your precise longitudinal and latitudinal location.
Using GPS technology, the MeetMe iPhone app (free) pinpoints your coordinates. You are then prompted to enter a telephone number, and send a text message. The message includes the time, approximate street address and longitude and latitude coordinates.
I suppose the app could be appealing for some, purely as a novelty. If, for example, someone texted to ask you where you are, this app would really help you to get specific.
Or, if you’re trying to meet a group of people in a crowded, noisy space, I could see why MeetMe could be helpful. Or perhaps you’re hiking on a long, winding trail, and want to ensure someone knows your most recent location.
Nevertheless, the technology seems excessive. Unless you’re a top-secret spy trying to stay in contact with the home office, or a parolee who needs to let a parole officer know where you are all the time, this app seems to have little real-world function.
When I look for someone, I prefer to use a major landmark, like the Sears Tower, or a McDonald’s, rather that trying to chart coordinates. But if you’re into sharing specifics, this app seems very accurate.
